Grower Information
: A Simply Beautiful® selection. One-of-a-kind color partners beautifully with many sun-loving annuals – everything goes with black! • The buzz is building around Black Velvet, making it a sure-fire hit at retail. • An excellent choice for premium baskets and containers.
Garden writers have already picked up on this innovative black petunia and driven up consumer demand. The upright, mounded plants are early to flower, have a tightly branched habit, and are filled with color all season. Black Velvet is easy to grow with no special culture needed, and is adaptable to cold finishing programs with no PGRs required if grown cool. Our two other distinctive petunias shown here – Phantom and Pinstripe – are the perfect growing and selling companions.
Black Velvet Petunia was announced the winner of Greenhouse Grower’s Industry’s Choice Award and chosen as that magazine’s Reader’s Choice in Summer 2010. Black Velvet was also recognized as one of the best new introductions from the 2010 California Spring Trials and Top Performer at the University of Minnesota in 2010.
Propagation Information
: Avoid stretch by moving crop to cooler air temperature in second and third weeks of propagation. Transplant on time.
Culture Information
: Cool temperatures and high light will reduce or eliminate any need for PGRs. Monitor pH regularly for high pH and possible iron deficiency. Flowering will be best as days lengthen in late Spring and Summer. Daylength of more than 14 hours will hasten flowering.
Plant Growth Regulators
: B-Nine(S) 1,500-2,500 ppm, applied 2-4 times, can be used to control habit early. Bonzi(D) 0.25-1.0 ppm applied as crop matrues will control final height but not delay flowering or reduce flower size. B-Nine applications late in the crop time can cause instability in flower color.
